Ive always since Pokemon Yellow on the Game Boy been of the opinion that players should play with Pokemon they like best, not necessarily what the current meta is, so read about the theme decks see what Pokemon they contain, see which of the trainer cards would best suit your playstyle and then go and have fun!
Excellent cards for this deck are Priest of Urabrask and Oxidda Golem, which can come down for cheap and put six mana toward an emerge creature, Act of Treason effects, which allow you to sac your opponents creatures to pay for your spells, and Heat Shimmer effects, which will give you a token copy of a creature (which will have the original creatures mana value) to sacrifice
