The part where the player loses half of their life isn't instead of the number of objects they chose, but according to the wording, it's actually in addition to the number of objects they chose

If I were to upgrade these decks with pulls from booster packs, then I would shave some of these weaker cards, especially ones that cannot be turned into ink, and add more five-drops, six-drops and seven-drops

Like the other combos on this list, this one is easy to break up with some removal
